Making People Happy
Trying to satisfy other people’s values and other people’s aesthetics is not quite a fool’s errand, but it’s definitely a luxury, which makes it a foolish goal unless there are plenty of resources to spare.
I’m interested in the Model T and the GT40, not the Pontiac Aztek. I’ve put so much energy into developing my own knowledge and my own vision, it seems dumb to succumb too quickly to outside pressure from people who don’t understand my solutions. If the customer were always right, they wouldn’t need me. Likewise, when I’m the customer I like to defer to experts who understand my needs, even though they don’t necessarily care what I think.
In general, there’s a lot to say about empathy vs. compassion, with one of those two being definitely better than the other.
